InterDigital starts a war in court against Disney's streaming platforms
A “continued infringement of intellectual property” has led to InterDigital, a company that had contributed its developments to streaming services such as Disney+, Hulu or ESPN+, to initiate litigation against The Walt Disney Company.
Cases have been filed in the United States Federal District Court in the Central District of California, in the State Court of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), in the Regional Court of Munich (Germany), and in the Mannheim and Düsseldorf Local Divisions of the Unified Patent Court. As explained Josh Schmidt, the company's legal director, InterDigital's video technologies had been key to allow disney transmit content in a “efficient and improve user experience”.
However, Schmidt anticipates that this time they are not using their technologies in a fair, ethical and authoritative manner, leading InterDigital to initiate a judicial process in search of a “fair compensationIn their own words: “We always prefer to enter into licensing agreements through friendly negotiation, but we are committed to receiving fair compensation for our pioneering research, lo que nos permite seguir invirtiendo en la próxima generación de tecnología”.
“Only by receiving fair compensation for the use of our technology will we be able to continue investing today in the development of tomorrow's technology. For consumers and creators like Disney, the long-term success of the streaming industry depends on it,” explains the company, whose understanding technology, in their own words, becomes essential for services like Disney+: “Without our contributions in areas such as advanced video compression, it would take days to download your favorite programs, and loading uncompressed data would seriously overload the Internet,” the firm adds in a statement.
