Rogue Labs uses URSA Cine Immersive (Blackmagic) to create content aimed at Apple Vision Pro
The digital cinema camera Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive and DaVinci Resolve Studio software are the technological base with which Rogue Labs is developing an immersive audiovisual aerial training experience for the device Apple Vision Pro.
This new innovative experience, which uses content in the format Apple Immersive Video, will appear in the new application of Rogue Labs for Apple Vision Pro devices, Flight Sight by Rogue Aviation, and will transport viewers directly into the pilot's seat to learn how to fly helicopters Robinson. Flight Sight uses a combination of realistic, three-dimensional helicopter models and Apple Immersive Video images to place pilots in real life scenarios, so that they can become familiar with maneuvers and procedures without having to take off.
The application includes three dimensional helicopter models, which will provide opportunities for interactive learning within the immersive environment of an airport. In addition, Flight Sight will have procedural spatial maps that will allow students to visualize their arrival and departure routes, in addition to “amazing” flight experiences for both trainees and those who simply want to do it for pleasure. In the words of Corey Walter, production manager: “We are creating a first-of-its-kind space training platform for helicopter pilots that combines the realism of stereoscopic images with the immersive features of Apple Vision Pro. (…) Research shows that immersive first-person images can create a very compelling sense of presence and activate the brain's memory mechanisms, helping students feel as if they had already carried out the actions before flying a real aircraft.”

Matt Barnes, founder of Rogue Labs, had experimented with his own catchment, which, he acknowledges, “were not easy to handle either during production or in post-production.” The chamber of Blackmagic It was, according to Barnes, “the answer to almost every problem we encountered: from image quality and sharpness, to the dynamics of Resolve-based post-production, and it really made a huge difference.”
To shape this content, the production team set up a camera URSA Cine Immersive in it helicopter pilot seat to capture a student's perspective as their instructor gives them directions during the takeoff, flight and landing. This presented challenges such as keeping the camera stable in a crowded, moving location, which Walter addresses: "We've been recording actual training sessions inside the cockpit, from basic power-up sequences to advanced autorotation maneuvers. Recording in such an environment means dealing with vibrations, tight spaces, and complex lighting conditions. From a product design and integration perspective, such limitations influenced our decision to capture both the instructor's behavior and the student's perspective within the cockpit. the same shot. The URSA Cine Immersive makes this possible by offering an incredibly wide and sharp three-dimensional field of view, which performs well even in low light and the limited surface area of the cabin.”
The Rogue Labs team benefited from some of the key features of the Blackmagic camera, such as its 5-inch touch screen or its foldable LCD monitor, which was helpful for display color data in a certainly small environment. Likewise, the production team highlights other keys such as ease of use, the dynamic range of the sensor, the resolution of the camera or the 90 fps frame rate.
URSA Immersive, DaVinci and Vision Pro: a unique ecosystem
For the team Rogue Labs, the work dynamic that brings together the model URSA Cine Immersive, the program DaVinci Resolve Studio and the device Apple Vision Pro They provide a “resolution and quality” that is not found in other similar solutions available on the market.
"For example, it is extremely important that the gauges can be read while in the cockpit, and only the resolution and quality provided by the combination of URSA Cine Immersive, DaVinci Resolve and Apple Immersive Video met the strict requirements we established for this project and, in fact, exceeded our expectations. We are very happy with the tools we have at our disposal, we feel like we are living in the future," he explains Barnes, who emphasizes that "now, with the URSA Cine Immersive, we can really take advantage of what can be done with this new technology. The difference in resolution, sharpness and the experience of true immersion is unmatched by what other available solutions offer."
Flight Sight will be available in the App Store this fall.
