The SGAE Foundation present the SGAE 2025 Yearbook of the performing, musical and audiovisual arts, analysis of the main indicators of the behavior of the cultural sector, consumption habits in 2024 and their evolution compared to previous years, which highlights the fall of cinema in most of its indicators, as well as the historical lows of radio and television consumption.

According to data from SGAE Yearbook, the evolution of cinema has slowed down in 2024. Although in 2023, the sector seemed to show positive data regarding the pandemic, it has not managed to maintain the enthusiasm of the public nor the collection. And, although the number of sessions has increased by 2.4% compared to 2023, viewers and revenue have fallen by 5.4% and 2.2%, respectively. When comparing the results of the year under study with those of 2019, decreases are detected in the three indicators: 11.7% in the offer, 29.8% in the assistance and 20.7% in the box office revenue.

The average number of tickets purchased per inhabitant in the Spanish territory in 2024 falls to one and a half annually. In Madrid, the community with the highest annual average, it reached 2.13. Navarra follows with 1.67 and Catalonia with 1.65. The average price of a movie ticket in Spain is 6.63 euros, while the average expenditure per inhabitant is 9.95 euros. Madrid and Catalonia are once again the communities that have the highest average expenditure per person per year with 15.81 euros and 11.77 euros, respectively. These same communities had the highest average ticket prices: 7.42 and 7.15 euros.

The highest-grossing films in Spanish theaters in 2024 were Inside out 2, while the leading Spanish feature film went to Bowfinger again: Father there is only one 4. By community, the sequel to the animated film leads all the lists of most viewed films, except in Castilla y León, where Crane 4. I rude favorite is placed in first position.

Radio and television, with historic lows

The SGAE 2025 Yearbook describes historic lows in it traditional radio and television consumption in 2024, reaching averages per person per day of 92 and 171 minutes, respectively. While the radius was reduced by a mere minute Compared to 2023, reaching 2021 figures, television lost 10 compared to the previous year and 51 compared to 2019. It is the fourth consecutive year that a decrease in television consumption has been observed.

Despite these data, the advertising revenues obtained in both media rose again, according to Infoadex data. The broadcast of advertising on radio contributed 489 million euros (highest in the last decade), and on television, 1,768 million. In both cases there were increases compared to 2023, of 6% and 1.9%, respectively. However, if compared to 2019, television advertising revenues experienced a decline of 12%.

This decline in traditional consumption is contrasted with the increase in subscriptions to video platforms. 63.3% of households with Internet access consume them, according to the CNMC. Netflix was once again the platform with the most users (50%), followed by Amazon Prime Video with 40.8%, according to EGM. The two platforms see their percentages increase, by nine tenths and 3.6 percentage points.

In the same way, people who enjoy streaming audiovisual content reach the 69.9% of the population, four points more than the previous year and 38.4 more than in 2015. This contrasts with the fall in content downloads, which has remained constant since 2020. For its part, half of Internet users consume podcasts (an increase of 5.1 points compared to 2023).

On the other hand, the video game sector, which during 2024 had a total turnover of 2,408 million euros in our country according to AEVI data, grew by 2.9% compared to 2023. 64.7% of this amount corresponds to the digital market, which increased its income by 19.8% compared to a year before. The remaining 35.3% comes from physical sales and, in this case, it loses 18.1%.

SGAE Yearbook Methodology

He SGAE 2025 Yearbook offers rigorous and detailed information on the main sectors of the arts scenic, musical and audiovisual, with tens of thousands of numerical data and 372 graphs and statistical tables, some of our own creation. It arises as a result of a laborious process of capturing and processing data, compiling sources and analyzing this information, in collaboration with SGAE and CIMEC.

In its twenty-fifth edition of the SGAE Yearbook, the 186,000 live shows and more than 3.4 million cinema sessions. This report analyzes the main indicators of the cultural sector. Not only are the results for 2024 included, but also comparisons with the figures from the previous year, complemented with the evolution of the main data since 2015.

In order to provide this detailed analysis, the Yearbook includes specific data on multiple features of the shows (attendees, collection, ticket prices), treated globally and presenting, in some cases, significant classifications (highest-grossing films, best-selling albums, stage productions with the largest audience, etc.).
