Bitmovin Stream Lab MCP Server: AI for Video Playback Testing
Stream Lab MCP Server, the latest development of Bitmovin, allows AI agents and large language models (LLM) to perform video playback tests on TVs, browsers, and consoles, and analyze the results in real time.
Created in collaboration with Alpic, the new MCP server allows agents to IA and to the LLM use Bitmovin's Stream Lab automated video streaming testing solution no need for integration code or manual test setup. Through natural language commands, AI agents can perform tasks such as creating and managing test configurations, run tests and analyze playback on more than 30 physical test targets, including Samsung, LG and Vizio televisions, web browsers and video game consoles.
Bitmovin's new solution is based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that defines a structured interface between AI agents and external systems. Unlike a traditional API, which simply offers fixed endpoints, an MCP-based server provides a context-rich orchestration layer for AI interactions.
The Stream Lab MCP server can be combined with the Bitmovin observability MCP server so AI agents can access real quality of experience (QoE) data and improve testing with Stream Lab, for example by prioritizing testing on devices where viewers detect more problems and measuring the impact of the changes.
James Varndell, senior director of product management at Bitmovin, explains that Stream Lab replaces the “slow manual testing processes” for fully automated testing on physical devices. “Now, with the launch of Stream Lab MCP, we offer our customers a powerful new way to control playback testing using simple commands in everyday language without human intervention. With Stream Lab MCP Server, video services can enable MCP-enabled AI tools, such as Claude, to interact with Stream Lab tests using natural language to explore test devices, create and run tests, and analyze test reports. “This makes agential AI practical on a large scale,” he says.
