Global acquires a majority stake in The Overlap, a growing European reference in football contexts
The Overlap, a sports media group founded by Gary Neville with a significant presence in digital channels, has been acquired by the entertainment firm Global, in a movement that seeks to create a media network that encompasses multiple brands and channels in all sports areas, led by football.
The Overlap has become one of the reference windows in the football field since its launch in 2021. Covering sports such as football, rugby and cricket, it offers all types of content that includes exclusive interviews or the successful series Stick to Football. Currently, it has more than 38 million monthly views on YouTube, and recently announced that it has reached 2.2 billion views on all platforms in 2025.
With Global as the majority shareholder, The Overlap becomes co-chair by Gary Neville y Global Group CEO Simon Pitts, con Scott Melvin as chief executive director. The new owner will use its platforms, relationships and marketing structure to support the growth of The Overlap, applying everything from its distribution capabilities to its data-based strategy, including the digital advertising pool of Global (DAX). The news comes after the launch of Global Studios, a division that seeks to become a reference in audiovisual storytelling through several production facilities and fluid multiplatform distribution.
Gary Neville points to Global as the “perfect partner” to achieve its goal of becoming a “leading” sports and football media platform. From Global's side, its CEO Simon Pitts emphasizes that the move "accelerates our growth strategy in video, podcasts and branded entertainment, and reinforces Global's position at the center of the sports conversation following the recent launch of Sport by Global."
In his short career, The Overlap It has won multiple awards, including YouTube Channel of the Year from Broadcast Sport and YouTube Program of the Year from the Sports Journalism Awards, and has recently secured broadcast rights to the German Bundesliga. The platform has high-profile talents, such as Stick to Football, con Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher, Jill Scott, Ian Wright y Roy Keane, así como From Debate, with Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes. In May 2025, The Overlap launched Stick To Cricket, con Sir Alastair Cook, Michael Vaughan, David Lloyd y Phil Tufnell.
