France blocks the majority purchase of Dailymotion by Yahoo!
The purchase intention of 75% of the French online video distribution platform clashes with the opposition of the French government.
The statements of the French Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry, Arnaud Montebourg, stating that the acquisition of a 75% stake in Dailymotion by Yahoo! would not benefit either party, have ended up cooling the purchase operation of the video platform in the hands of France-Telecom Orange.
Pellerin maintains that the agreement with Yahoo! It was not balanced enough and would have led to the demise of Dailymotion, but it has indicated that it would be an economic and industrial endpoint for Dailymotion to remain exclusively French.
And the fact is that the entry of the American multinational, which some sources had estimated at 300 million dollars, was not viewed favorably by the French government, which saw the project of one of its greatest successes on the Internet in danger.
It should be noted that the French government owns a 27% stake in France Telecom, a reference partner in Dailymotion. This platform is among the most popular video websites, although far from the leader YouTube, in the hands of Google. France Telecom-Orange bought Dailymotion for $170 million in a two-stage operation, the most recent closed last January.
