Blackmagic Design - South Carolina Governor - Secondary School

A broad ecosystem of solutions Blackmagic, ranging from film cameras like the Pyxis 6K to DaVinci Resolve Studio post-production software, are deployed daily by South Carolina Governor High School to train students in its cinematography program.

Blackmagic Design - South Carolina Governor - Secondary SchoolKevin Human, director of the school's Film department, is the main promoter of a two-year training program which seeks to ensure that those students interested in the world of cinema can prepare for specialized training upon leaving high school. "I wanted to show students that there is a way forward in the industry if they commit to putting in the work. It's not an easy field to be successful in, and the changes in technology, culture and our relationship with media and screens can be overwhelming, but this also presents opportunities," he explains.

The program immerses students in the product ecosystem of Blackmagic Design from day one, as Human relates: “Students start using iPads with the application Blackmagic Cloud. In the app, the focus is on the basic elements of visual storytelling, things like composition and shot sizes. We also introduced the concept of focus with the iPad, but it's pretty basic. Then they start using Blackmagic Pyxis 6K. So far, the transition from iPad to The boxes It has been fluid. The students are already familiar with the interface "And they don't have to relearn anything, so we can focus on introducing new, more advanced concepts and features."

Blackmagic Design - South Carolina Governor - Secondary SchoolIn this way, the program adopts a intensive focus and broad in terms of professional cinematography, providing robust practical skills. “Students who are initially shy and quiet end up being the ones who now shout “quiet on set” with the authority of an experienced assistant director,” says Human, who believes that “it is a pleasure to see these young students use the cinematic arts to grow as individuals.”

At the post-production level, Human chooses the application DaVinci Resolve to iPad as their first window into the world of editing: "Initially, we used DaVinci Resolve on the iPad, but we tried to quickly move to the desktop version. By the time the students start recording in Blackmagic RAW on the Pyxis 6K, they are already comfortable with the Edit module, and then we naturally start working on the Color module and, later, making audio adjustments in Fairlight. We come to Fusion in the second semester, when they take a course on visual effects."
