Appear X - Corus

Appear signs the renewal of the news contribution architecture of Corus through the standardization of the SRT as the main protocol between the subsidiaries, news offices and operational centers of the network.

The transformation of Corus focuses on the change of circuits leased to IP, using the protocolo SRT to allow a safe and stable media transportation for a 24-hour active news environment. Draw Kikauka, senior director of enterprise architecture and broadcast engineering at the company, thus sought to minimize its dependence on third parties, as well as incorporate “greater capacity” internally in its operations. Everything from a hybrid IP model that would allow it to interoperate with its legacy interfaces, such as BUT.

After exploring different alternatives, the Canadian media ended up betting on Appear X, high-capacity, ultra-dense, low-latency gateway and media processing platform. The implementation is accompanied by an orchestration layer based on Skyline Dataminer with a custom user interface developed by Rocket and application layer tools for operator programming and control. The architecture also supports ground contribution to cloud, enabling more flexible news production workflows.

Ed McGivern, president and CEO of Appear US, considers that “Corus has taken a decisive step that many broadcasters are now prioritizing, replacing dependence on leased circuits with an IP-centric architecture designed for resilience.” “By consolidating functionality and increasing consistency across a nationwide network, it demonstrates how a more streamlined contribution model can deliver both robustness and efficiency without adding operational burden,” he says.
