IB3 and Cellnex begin the deployment of the DAB+ network in the Balearic Islands: 12 broadcasting centers, scalable architecture…

The telecommunications center of Alfàbia (Bunyola) hosts the presentation of the first regional DAB+ digital radio network in Spain, a development of Cellnex e IB digital with the collaboration of IB3 that will allow citizens to enjoy greater sound quality, new services and a greater variety of programs.

This initiative , the result of a strategic collaboration between public and private entities, aims to consolidate Balearics as a “leading region in the modernization of broadcasting”. The issuing center of alphabet one of the enclaves is erected strategic of the first phase of this deployment, whose adaptation works started at the end of 2025.

The new network DAB+ represents, in the words of Cellnex, a significant evolution compared to traditional FM. Thanks to this technology, IB3 Radio begins the path of its digital emissions, opening the door to the future incorporation of autonomous private concessionaires. In this sense, Daniel Eric Barjacoba, director of IB3 Ràdio, recalls that "the launch of the DAB+ network allows us to make a qualitative leap in the public radio service: better sound quality, more capacity for new channels and associated information services, and coverage designed to grow in an orderly manner throughout the archipelago."

Compared to other pilot experiences that have been developed in the past, the Balearic Islands network has been designed from its inception as a infrastructure in real, stable operation and with a vocation for continuous growth. The global agreement between Cellnex and IB Digital contemplates a “comprehensive technical scope” that will serve Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera by activating 12 emission centers. The project is designed to be completed in a period of 18 months from its beginning, with a technical architecture capable of incorporating new programs and dealerships without interrupting existing service.

During the presentation, Alfonso Alvarez, CEO of Cellnex Iberia, highlighted that “this project places the Balearic Islands at the forefront of digital radio and shows how collaboration between administrations and operators accelerates innovation, with a solid, stable and scalable infrastructure from day one.” For its part, Xisco Canovas, general director of Digital Strategy and Technological Development (IB Digital), stressed that “this deployment reinforces the digital roadmap of the Balearic Islands and puts technology at the service of citizens, with a more modern radio, with more options and better listening quality.”

The event brought together prominent institutional and business figures, and was attended by RTVE, CNMC, SETELECO, FENITEL, ABITEL (Balearic Islands), ISTEC, FIBWI and DAS Insel Radio.
