By consensus between PSOE and PP, Alberto Oliart will replace Luis Fernández as president of the RTVE Corporation, who will present his resignation this Friday. The appointment of Alberto Oliart must be supported in Congress by a two-thirds majority.

Alberto OliartAs already PanoramaAudiovisual.com advanced, Luis Fernández will present his resignation from his position as president of the RTVE Corporation during the Extraordinary Board of Directors that will take place next Friday.

Alberto Oliart will replace him in the coming days, following the agreement reached between José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and the president of the Popular Party, Mariano Rajoy.

The socialist and popular parliamentary groups will propose in the next few hours in Congress Alberto Oliart as the new president of the RTVE Corporation. The current president, Luis Fernández, will present his resignation to the Corporation's Board of Directors this Friday.

This agreement has been reached after several days of conversations between Zapatero and Rajoy to guarantee the independence and plurality of RTVE in this new stage of public service, according to Government sources cited by Efe.

Former Minister of Defense

Alberto Oliart was Minister of Defense from February 26, 1981 to December 3, 1982 with the Government of Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo (UCD). Previously, he had held the Industry and Energy and Health portfolios with Adolfo Suárez.

Graduated in Law from the University of Barcelona and a State lawyer, he carried out executive tasks in private banking before joining the Government. During his time at the head of the Ministry of Defense, Spain joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The new president of the Corporation was born in Mérida (Badajoz) in 1928.
