Planet 51 is tested in Spain

With more than twelve million dollars collected in the first weekend of release in the US, Planet 51, the largest production of Spanish cinema, produced by Ilion Animation Studios under the direction of the brothers Ignacio and Javier Pérez Dolset, is put to the test this weekend on the Spanish billboard. HP, BluArc, Avid, Bull and Tangram have been the main technological partners.

It is curious to see how in the week in which producers and politicians throw away deals, the brothers Ignacio and Javier Pérez Dolset give a lesson in cunning in a market so attached to subsidies. While the ICAA offices smoke, millions of children around the world eat hamburgers while playing with the characters of Planet 51. The largest production in the history of Spanish cinema arises, curiously, from two visionaries outside of film production. The brothers Ignacio and Javier Pérez Dolset, after trying their luck with the video game company Pyro Studios (with hits like Commandos, Pretorians, Imperial Glory o Planet 51), the LaNetro portal and Zed Group (with the participation of Planeta) decide to take a step further in entertainment by founding Ilion Animation Studios.

Based in the Madrid town of Alcobendas, Ilion Studios was born in a big way by launching this Earthling-Martian film that had a budget of 205 million dollars. And for those who have not yet realized that every day if there is no marketing there is no box office, note that only a quarter of this budget has been dedicated to production, allocating more than 150 million to international promotion.

En su estreno norteamericano, en el fin de semana más taquillero del año (el anterior al Día de Acción de Gracias) y pese a la mala acogida con que una crítica defensora acérrima de su producto interior ha recibido a la producción española, Planet 51 ha recaudado más de doce millones de euros. Aunque la cifra resulte desorbitada, valga recordar que el último estreno de Pixar, Up, recaudó en su primer fin de semana cuatro veces más.

Todo un reto técnico

Al margen de la originalidad de la película, tan denostada por algunas críticas, la verdad es que Planet 51 ha sido el mayor reto tecnológico llevado a cabo para una producción cinematográfica. Dirigida por Jorge Blanco y escrita por Joe Stillman, presenta una gran excelencia técnica que le ha valido la nominación a los Óscars. Para poder afrontar los rigores de esta producción, Ilion Animation Studios desplegó una infraestructura técnica bien desarrollada en la que los artistas de Ilion han producido esta película con la ayuda de más de 200 puestos Hewlett Packard, y más de 50.000 GB de espacio de almacenaje de BluArc y más de 1.500 bases de render. Además de BluArc y HP, Illion ha contado con Avid, Bull y Tangram como partners tecnológicos.
