PyeongChang 2018 tests 8K and 5G production
At the Winter Olympic Games, NHK is covering a total of 90 hours in 8K (Super Hi-Vision) with multi-camera production in HDR (BT 2020) using the HLG format devised by NHK and the BBC.
With an eye on Tokyo 2020, the NHK is carrying out a pilot test of 8K production of the Winter Olympics that are celebrated these days in PyeongChang.
Although the Japanese broadcaster already carried out some pioneering experiments with a single camera at the Rio de Janeiro Games, this time it will cover 8K (Super Hi-Vision) a total of 90 hours with multi-camera production in HDR (BT 2020) using the HLG format devised by NHK and the BBC. Figure skating, ski jumping, snowboarding as well as key moments in the Jugeos opening and closing ceremonies will be produced in 8K.
To do this, NHK is using a dozen 8K cameras sending the signal to the International Broadcast Center (IBC) and Japan where it is being distributed on giant screens in various locations.
The 8K UHD HDR signal is simultaneously downconverted to provide a 4K HDR output that broadcasters such as NBCU are using.
For its part, Olympic Broadcast Services (OBS) as an official broadcaster is working on a version 4K SDR (BT.709) although the base production continues to be HD 1080i, for which OBS has more than 400 cameras and more than 250 specialized cameras and aerial shots from helicopters and drones. OBS has, for example, installed small 4K fixed-lens cameras on the front of Olympic bobsleighs to offer an extraordinary bullet view. Although the cameras are 4K, the streaming output will be HD.
It is also testing the possibilities of 5G to transmit live video over the air. To this end, Korea Telecom has installed a 5G network and base stations around the bobsleigh track and at other Winter Games venues, including Gangneung Olympic Park.
Although not part of the main broadcast and can only be viewed by viewers in special zones using 5G-ready mobile devices, these tests include temporary views of skaters in motion and the ability to track competitors on the Olympic Cross Country course with the ability to select different viewpoints in real time.
