The EVS-OpenCube proposal based on the MXF container guarantees a problem-free exchange of video files with full interoperability, adding substantial value to the production chain both in the audio and video essence and in all types of metadata. In this interview, Benoit Février, managing director of EVS-OpenCube, and Marc Caeymaex, sales manager of EVS in Spain, Portugal and Africa reveal some of the advantages of working with MXF.

Both production companies and post-producers have recently been facing a huge increase in the volume of video material generated, especially in cases where production is based on uncompressed and high-resolution formats. The result is a significant increase in storage needs at your facilities. This change in trend also brings with it the challenge of developing the entire tapeless HD workflow so that it is scalable and provides optimal performance.

The EVS-OpenCube proposal based on the MXF container guarantees a problem-free exchange of video files with full interoperability, adding substantial value to the production chain both in the audio and video essence and in all types of metadata. In both production companies and broadcasters, the MXF facilitates an agile and efficient workflow as well as helps the digitization of digital cinema processes.

Among the solutions that EVS-OpenCube offer, the new OpenCubeHD/SD server stands out, offering a wide range of innovative functions in both SD and HD with dual channel for MPEG Long GOP and native support for the Sony XDCAM HD and Avid DNxHD codecs. This platform also offers a faster than real-time JPEG2000 encoding process as well as MXF file generation for integration into all types of production workflows.

The OpenCubeDCP update, for its part, presents the possibility of encoding without direct compression of HD, 2K and 4K material, thus simplifying content management and operations in digital cinematography environments as much as possible. Providing faster than real-time 2K DCP encoding, and near-real-time 4K DCP encoding, this platform enables agile and secure editing, reformatting and modification of DCP.

The MXF has also improved the acquisition and ingestion processes. In this line, proposals such as the multipurpose reformatting tool XFConverter from EVS-OpenCube stand out, ideal for digital migrations of workflows that require file conversion without transcoding of video content and multi-format output.

For the ingestion of P2 material, the OpenCube proposal is the latest version of P2soft that includes MXF P2 content management for Panasonic with review, ingestion, logging and transfer, as well as direct consolidation to the timeline in Avid Interplay that allows editing at the same time as the ingestion is carried out. This system allows users to manage their files in ingest and transfer to different destinations such as playout and post-production servers, at the same time.

Finally, highlight the new MXFToolkit, an ideal solution for supporting formats based on MXF files since it allows you to integrate all standard cameras on the market, camcorders, non-linear editing systems and D-Cinema digital recorders, storage and broadcast servers. Among its new features, the partial MXF MPEG2 Long GOP restoration stands out.

Large studios such as Twentieth Century Fox or broadcasters such as MTV, Sogecable, Arte or LaSexta have opted for a compressed production file format that does not compromise quality and is totally transparent, reliable and interoperable in all processes, both their own and with third-party files.
