Europe now has more than 400 channels in high definition

Según estimaciones del Observatorio Audiovisual Europeo, actualmente habría en Europa aproximadamente 414 canales en alta definición, lo que representaría un crecimiento de 274 a finales de 2009. En su último informe, destaca que un número significativo de radiodifusores públicos europeos están lanzando canales específicos HD. El deporte sigue siendo el género más importante en la televisión HD.

High definition does not stop growing in Europe. According to the MAVISE database and the European Audiovisual Observatory, there would currently be approximately 414 HD channels available in Europe, which would represent a growth of 274 at the end of 2009. In its latest report, it highlights that a significant number of European public broadcasters are launching specific HD channels. Sports remains the largest genre on HD television (approximately 20% of HD channels), followed by movies, generic and documentary channels.

The distribution of HD television channels has also shown rapid development in the past year. By the end of 2010, two-thirds of IPTV services were offered to HD channels and one-third of IPTV services were offered to more than 10 HD channels. HD channels are now available on DTT networks in thirteen countries (comparing three networks at the end of 2009). With the progressive digitalization of networks (35% digital in the EU at the end of 2009) more and more HD channels are appearing. Offers from major operators include between 8 and 23 HD channels. The countries that offer the satellite package with more than 20 HD channels are France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom. In Hungary, Germany and Russia there are specific HD satellite platforms.

Stereoscopy

The Observatory report highlights that the growth trend of 3D television in European homes continues. Once again, sports and movies are being the most important content that drives this technology. 3D channels are being tested and launched on a range of satellite platforms including Sky (in the UK, Italy and Germany), Viasat, Canal+ (France and Spain), Meo (Portugal) and NTV (Russia). In the United Kingdom, the Sky 3D service claims to have 70,000 subscribers at the beginning of 2011.

Sobre el mismo período, un total de 118 canales fueron cerrados en 2010. Aparte de los canales regionales y locales, los tipos más comunes de canales en la Unión Europea que cesaron las transmisiones en 2010 eran los canales de entretenimiento (16), los canales pornográficos (11) y los canales de tele-tienda (9). Entre los que desaparecieron en 2010 se incluyen canales tan variados como los canales del servicio público cultural.es (Canal cultural español) y RTBF SAT (canal internacional belga), los canales italianos MTV de la música ,y el de viajes en el canal tele-tienda de Thomas Cook TVA y las noticias y canal debate de Het Gesprek en Holanda.

If we consider the geographical origin of European channels, the United Kingdom leads with 1,222 channels established at the end of 2010. At least half of the channels established in the United Kingdom (588) are operated by other European countries, and this includes the many language versions of channels such as Disney Cinemagic, Viasat Explorer etc. Behind the United Kingdom are Spain (1,180), Italy (1,059), Hungary (558), France (550) and the Netherlands (421). Regional and local channels are particularly numerous in many of these countries, in contrast to the UK. The concentration of channels established in the European Union in certain countries is considerable; Five countries account for at least two thirds of the total channels.

Digitization

At the end of 2009, 56.1% of European households (36 European States members of the European Audiovisual Observatory) were digital, compared to 45.3% the previous year. These data grow to 71.5% if only households in the European Union have been taken into account.

El papel de la televisión digital terrestre, la digitalización de las plataformas tradicionales de distribución como cable y satélite, y el crecimiento de IPTV en diversos países europeos, están dando fuerzas a la digitalización.
