ARRI has announced in Las Vegas a strategic agreement with Cameron-Pace Group to collaborate in the development of the stereoscopic market. In addition, ARRI will expand the family of Alexa cameras with Alexa M, designed for action shoots and complex 3D productions, and Alexa Studio.

ARRI (BoothC4337) has announced in Las Vegas a strategic agreement with Cameron-Pace Group to collaborate in the development of the stereoscopic market. One of the first lines of collaboration is related to the new Alexa M. ARRI and Cameron-Pace Group have been working in recent months on strategic 3D projects such as The three Musketeers; Hugo Cabret by Martin Scorserse; Life of Pi by Ang Lee and 47 Ronin, the latest film starring Keanu Reeves.

Alexa M

ARRI is developing a new model in the Alexa camera family: the Alexa M, a new and flexible solution consisting of a camera with separate head and body modules. Alexa M is tailor-made for action photography, and for difficult 3D shoots and productions. Based on cutting-edge ARRI technology, the M model delivers the same exceptional image quality that distinguishes this digital production system.

The M head is optimized for small sizes and low weights, offering the best flexibility when used in lightweight 3D setups. Multiple mounting points on the top and bottom allow for easy mounting to existing 3D platforms. The head and body are connected by a fiber optic cable which can also be used to power the head depending on the distance. The rear offers several recording options, like the standard Alexa model: images, sound and metadata that can be recorded on SxS cards or external recording devices, offering different types of processing flows. Alexa M has a PL base, works perfectly with all existing 35mm lenses and is compatible with a wide range of ARRI accessories. Alexa M prototypes will be presented at IBC 2011.

Alexa Studio

ARRI has also announced in Las Vegas the new Alexa Studio, which will feature an optical viewfinder and a 4:3 sensor. Like the ARRICam Studio, the Alexa Studio is equipped with an electronically adjustable silent shutter mirror and an optical viewfinder. The viewfinder is a completely innovative development, allowing the camera to accept both 435 and ARRICam style viewfinder extensions. Operators will receive high resolution, high contrast images with true colors and little geometric distortion.

Utilizing the full 4:3 area of the Alexa sensor allows for plug-and-play use of the 2x anamorphic lenses in the Alexa Studio. Aside from the ARRIFlex D-21, the Alexa Studio is a digital camera with true anamorphic capabilities. Anamorphic lenses create a unique image quality that has been appreciated by directors throughout history, and that cannot be created in post-production.

Codex ARRIRaw

Codex Digital has reached an agreement with ARRI to manufacture the Codex ARRIRAW recorder for use with the popular ARRI Alexa and ARRIFlex D-21 digital cameras. The new recorder will be launched on its own and through ARRI's global dealer network. ARRI and its distributors will also sell Codex camera mounts, data packs and transfer stations.

Lightning

New at NAB 2011, ARRI has unveiled the L series: three Fresnel LED fixtures with unprecedented functionality and performance that allow, for the first time, the replacement of traditional Fresnels with LED-based units. The L7-T, L7-D and L7-C are the first LED fixtures to truly incorporate both Spot and Flood continuously focusable Fresnel features in a smooth, homogeneous light field. L refers to LED and 7 to the 7" Fresnel type lens shared by the three models launched. The L7-T is 3200 K (tungsten), the L7-D is 5600 K (for daytime work), and the L7-C allows color control.
