DVB and 3D@Home sign a collaboration agreement to develop 3D

The 3D@Home and DVB consortia will work together to share knowledge and agree on the development of standards for new stereoscopic environments.

The 3D@Home and DVB consortia have signed a collaboration agreement to promote the development of standards for 3DTV, share knowledge about 3D visualization and ensure the complementarity of the work carried out in this regard.

David Wood, president of the DVB commercial module in 3DTV, highlighted that "3D@Home is an important organization for 3DTV. They have many areas of interest, including the study of human factors related to stereoscopic viewing. For our part, our work focuses on the development of 3DTV signal distribution specifications. Both organizations have things to share.

El consorcio 3D@Home fue creado en 2008 con la misión de acelerar la comercialización del 3D en los hogares de todo el mundo y ofrecer la mejor experiencia visual posible por facilitar el desarrollo de normas, planes de trabajo y formación para la industria del 3D desde el contenido, hardware y software en toda la cadena de valor desde los proveedores a los consumidores.

Heidi Hoffman, director ejecutivo del consorcio 3D@Home ha afirmado que “nuestros miembros, muchos de ellos no participan directamente en el área de la radiodifusión, podrán utilizar esta información en su toma de decisiones estratégicas, logrando así que todo el ecosistema se desarrolle más rápido y sin problemas”.

DVB comenzó su labor de normalización en 3DTV en enero de 2010. En febrero de 2011, la Junta Directiva aprobó la especificación DVB para un sistema de distribución de señales 3DTV en una primera fase. Este enfoque, denominado “Marco Compatible”, es ahora un documento básico en la entrega de 3DTV en todo el mundo bajo denominación DVB-3DTV Fase 1.

The Board of Directors recently approved the commercial needs that, under the name “Compatible Service”, intend for the 2D and 3D versions of a program to be broadcast within the same video signal, so that new 3D televisions and next-generation decoders will be able to receive 3D programs, while consumers with current 2D high definition television receivers and set-top boxes will be able to watch the 2D version. This second method is called DVB-3DTV Phase 2A.
