Sony increases options for 3D environments
Sony has expanded its range of stereoscopic production solutions with two new 3D camcorders: the PMW-TD300 shoulder camcorder and the compact HXR-NX3D1 3D XDCAM. Both have been designed to capture high-definition 3D images with maximum flexibility and comfort when filming. On the other hand, Sony announced at the last NAB the 3D-Link option for the PMW-F3 camcorder that will allow for greater efficiency when using 3D rig systems.
Another improvement in 3D environments is related to the MPE-200 3D processor that allows real-time analysis and correction of stereoscopic signals.
With the MPES-3D01 stereo image processing software version 1.3, the MPES-2D3D1 2D to 3D conversion software (in its version 1.1) and the quality control provided by the MPES-3DQC1 3D application, Sony is also making working in a 3D environment much easier.
On the other hand, Sony announced in Las Vegas SRMemory, a high-speed media recording device in the SRMaster family of products that will offer great recording capacity and allow stereoscopic files to be handled easily in any workflow, being able to store up to 5 Gbps.
The new PMW-TD300 is a versatile shoulder camcorder that uses two optics equipped with three half-inch CMOS sensors. The camcorder can be used for high definition 3D recording, including documentaries, news and other events.
As for the HXR-NX3D1, it also has a dual lens and two 1/4 inch sensors that allow 3D recording in AVCHD format. Both camcorders have been developed by Sony in response to industry demand for more flexibility and lower cost in 3D production solutions.
Additionally, using the new 3D-Link option on the PMW-F3, we can easily mount two of these camcorders on a 3D rig with the depth of field of 2D cameras.
The MPE-200 multi-image processor has become an essential element in live 3D recording. Together with the MPES-3D01 3D software suite it allows automatic and manual correction of both images with full control over the settings.
As for the MPES-2D3D1 software, it is giving a lot of talk in the market since it converts conventional 2D material into stereoscopic 3D, based on a proprietary algorithm developed by Sony and achieving a spectacular effect in all types of productions.
In addition, the new stereoscopic quality control software offers real-time binocular analysis between the right and left image, helping to avoid the annoying distortions and aberrations that cause so many headaches in psotproduction and so many headaches... to the viewer.
When conducting 3D recordings in off-studio locations, production switchers are an essential component of creating compelling stereoscopic content. Building on its high-end MVS-8000X mixer, which can handle up to 200 inputs and 100 outputs, Sony has developed the new MVS-7000X, which has 80 inputs and 48 outputs, ideal for medium-scale 3D productions.
Both products are compatible in a 3G single-link environment which together with optional 3D software can help simplify the start-up of 3D productions.
The new MCS-8M and DFS-900M mixers can also be used for smaller 3D events with a simple software upgrade.
At NAB, Sony introduced the SR-R1000 storage unit, the first memory-based deck within the high-end SRMaster family. It has four slots for SRMemory cards that can record with data rates of up to 5 Gbps. It can be configured with up to four inputs/outputs, each of which could be associated with a 3D source.
Simultaneous recording and playback makes the SR-R1000 ideal for studio, live recording or post-production applications. Sony has also launched the SR-R1 SRMaster portable recorder which is perfect for small scale stereoscopic productions.
Another aspect that Sony is taking maximum care of in these new 3D environments is monitoring. For example, the LMD-4251TD (42 inches) and LMD-2451TD (24 inches) allow you to view 3D images with the highest reliability. For projection, the SRX-R320 digital projector is another option to take into account.
