According to a study by NPD DisplaySearch, the commitment of the governments of Russia and India to DVB-T2 will mean a definitive boost to the second generation of this standard. As for 3D, while markets such as North America are stagnating, demand is increasing in Western Europe and China.

According to the market study Quarterly TV Design and Features Report that NPD DisplaySearch has drawn up for Q4, the regions most enthusiastic about 3D are Western Europe and China, while the push for stereoscopic TVs is losing steam in North America.

Paul Gray, Director of Electronics Research at NPD DisplaySearch, was surprised "to find that 3D appears to be a much more popular feature in China than in North America, with a penetration rate twice as high in the last quarter. Our report also shows that in North America and Japan it is lower than that of the Middle East."

The report reveals that North American consumers have lower-cost TVs with fewer features, unlike other regions. Chinese consumers are, on the contrary, enthusiasts of televisions widely equipped with, among other features, 3D, LED backlighting and smart TV.

The report also examines the growth of smart TV in different regions and reveals that there are several emerging markets where fixed broadband is becoming mainstream. In Saudi Arabia, Poland, the Philippines and Indonesia, which have 10 to 15 times as many 3G broadband subscribers, consumers still want to watch Internet video on their TVs, but usage is completely different in developed markets, where the TV is connected directly to a cable broadband line.

DVB-T2

The simultaneous adoption of new technologies is also clear in digital broadcasting. While developed markets have introduced digital terrestrial by developing the analogue switch, a second generation of digital broadcasting (DVB-T2) is breaking into Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

The report only forecasts the prospects for DVB-T2 reception on TV. It is estimated that a critical mass of countries have adopted DVB-T2. DVB-T2 shipments with fixed capacity are expected to grow from 3.4 million in 2011 to 64.7 million in 2015.

“In 2015, the number of DVB-T and DVB-T2 devices will be similar,” Gray added. “The decision by the Russian and Indian governments to adopt T2 has given a huge boost in confidence, rapid adoption and reduced costs,” notes Gray.

According to the report, the new digital streaming standard is not only being introduced in mature markets such as the United Kingdom and Sweden, but also in Nigeria and Kenya.
