Radio Nacional turns 75 and celebrates it with a traveling exhibition
Radio Nacional, coinciding with its 75th anniversary, intensifies its presence on the street with 'RNE, 75 years with you' 140 m² traveling exhibition that will tour more than 50 cities between January and May.
On this day, January 19, but in 1937 and in the midst of the Spanish Civil War, Radio Nacional was born in Salamanca. The media was precarious and the first editorial team was made up of just a dozen people, including actors and budding journalists. War reports were played in Spanish first and then repeated in foreign languages and slate records.
In 1940 RNE moved to Madrid and in 1949 it arrived in Barcelona, with the first broadcasts from the Liceo. The radio drama of the great voices, in Teatro invisible, and sports broadcasts occupied the leisure hours of the Spaniards. Already in the 60s, talking newspapers, or “parts”, arrived, but it was not until 1977 when the exclusive information of RNE disappeared, allowing the rest of the radio stations to make their own newscasts. Commercial advertising also abandoned RNE in the Transition.
RNE's contribution to the growth of Spanish radio is undoubted: many formats and announcers, essential in today's radio, began to be played on RNE: hourly bulletins; spaces for masses, such as Direct, direct with Alejo García or Protagonists by Luis del Olmo; or Radio 3 itself, born in 1981 with the Madrid Movida; the “transatlantics”, long magazines that in 1973 accommodate all types of genres, in the style of the great European public radio stations of the time; informative radio as Popular classics by Fernando Argenta; the sports center Sports Radio Gazette with Juan Manuel Gozalo; or the roundtables of correspondents with Victoriano Fernández Asís, giving way to young voices like Cirilo Rodríguez or Jesús Hermida.
For decades RNE has accompanied Spaniards in the most important moments of their lives and of our society, sometimes good and sometimes bad, transmitting sounds that are part of the history of Spain: from the report of the end of the Civil War, Zarra's goal in the voice of Matías Prats, the announcement by Alejo García of the legalization of the Communist Party; the night of 23F, the recent World Cup in South Africa... emotions in the form of sound that already belong to the individual heritage of each Spaniard.
Today, 75 years later, it is a solid radio station, which has long earned the seal of being an independent and plural radio station, where all voices and opinions are heard.
Professionals of the stature of Juan Ramón Lucas, Toni Garrido, Pepa Fernández, Mamen Asencio, Silvia Tarragona and Chema Abad, are today at the head of the major reference programs. Ana Sterling and Iñigo Alfonso, in the news 2 p.m. y 24 hours, with Luis Vázquez and Ángeles Bazán on the weekend. An information offer that is reinforced on weekends on Radio 5, RNE's 'All News' station.
75 years, with you
Public radio celebrates, with a seal of modernity and commitment to the future, its 75th anniversary on January 19 and will do so with the presence of the Prince and Princess of Asturias, who will visit the traveling exhibition 'RNE, 75 years with you'.
RNE wants Spaniards to know it inside. A platform will travel to more than 50 cities between January and May, to broadcast live programs and to carry an interactive exhibition throughout Spain, in which each citizen will be able to experience and personalize their visit, including the possibility of making their own news programs and even inventing the radio of the future.
This Wednesday, January 18, the Plaza de Felipe II in Madrid hosted the presentation of the traveling exhibition 'RNE, 75 years with you'. It is the first stop on the journey that this modern platform will make, presented by Benigno Moreno, director of Radio Nacional de España.
Moreno explained that, with this exhibition, "we show ourselves to the citizens as a company with an important past, but above all with our gaze set as far as possible in the future", since "the meaning of a public radio, and that of RTVE, is to be useful to the citizens, which is to whom we owe." For this reason, “we want them to feel that RNE is useful for them, that they use us… that they listen to us is a way to make ourselves socially profitable.”
The objective, in the words of the director of RNE, is “to show how we work every day and for people to see it.” We are “a cutting-edge radio station, which is in all media and with the best possible quality.”
The exhibition will tour the country through more than 50 cities, “because we think it is essential that it be presented in the same way, with the same interest and the same quality, in Madrid, Palencia or Valladolid,” said Moreno.
The 'RNE, with you' campaign
January 19 marks the 75th anniversary of the birth of Radio Nacional de España. RNE is launching a great campaign, 'RNE, with you', to bring public radio closer than ever to all Spaniards. A modern, participatory, plural and rigorous radio, but also entertaining and fun, that transmits emotion, a sense of humor and intelligent irony, and that has established itself as an information reference due to its independence and rigor.
RNE is today on all new media (internet, social networks, mobile, DTT, satellite...) and with general and specialized channels in classical music for all audiences, young and avant-garde, a news channel, an international channel that broadcasts in Spanish, English, French, Arabic, Russian, Portuguese and Sephardic. A radio station that is with the citizens, and that is very profitable socially for the public service it provides. The radio of all voices, ideas, thoughts, cultures, ages, social groups.
RNE has evolved with society to become what it is today: the radio of the present and the future, the radio that today's society demands, the essential one. Therefore, coinciding with its 75th anniversary, RNE will tour the country to experience it with listeners: RNE invites all citizens to get on the 75th anniversary platform, which will travel to more than 50 Spanish cities for more than 3 months. Associations from each city (cultural, leisure, youth, seniors, schools, etc.) will be invited so that they can get to know everyone's radio inside out.
The deployable vehicle will be installed in emblematic places in each city, to become a spectacular 140 meter 2 platform, where there will be: a radio studio to carry out live programs for the public; a wording for RNE professionals to develop their programs; and, above all, a large exhibition area, full of surprises.
Get in the truck and make your radio
This traveling exhibition-platform will allow citizens to experience radio in the most direct and personalized way possible. Each person will be able to individualize the visit to their liking, interacting at all times with touch screens, videos and audios.
The exhibition offers a journey from the present to the future, traveling through the past. In the most current area you can see the 6 RNE brands (Radio Nacional, Radio Clásica, Radio 3, Ràdio 4, Radio 5 and Radio Exterior); check 5.1 sound; the process, step by step, of preparing a news item in RNE; the radio workshop, so that the youngest people can make and record their first newscast, the audio of which will be sent to schools; the photographic exhibition of The radio in the street, carried out by RTVE throughout the country; or the photocall, where you can do “the interview of your life” with your favorite RTVE character, with a souvenir photo included on the website.
Each visitor will be able to travel back in time through “the sounds of your life.” He will be the one who will be able to choose what to listen to within the large RNE archive: the videos and audios that have had the greatest impact on him, what was broadcast the day he was born..., in addition to the museum with the pieces that used to be used for radio.
The future is already here: several terminals will show RNE applications for iPad and iPhone or the RNE website. And at the end of the journey each person will be able to make the radio they have always dreamed of come true with a game of mixing sounds, effects and music.
