Panasonic's P2 Recording Format Wins Tech Emmy
The innovative P2 recording media and the hardware developed based on them were presented in 2003 and offered a substantial improvement in workflows as they were based on files editable through a computer; a significant reduction in maintenance and operating costs by eliminating mechanical elements in cameras and recorders; and greater overall reliability. As a result, Panasonic has fueled the proliferation of solid-state video acquisition with global sales of P2-based products exceeding 220,000 units.
Featuring the industry's first solid-state design with no moving parts, P2 products have substantially reduced lead time associated with mechanical issues. P2 products can perform better in extreme environments and are resistant to extreme temperatures, shock and vibration, unlike mechanical tapes, hard drives and optical disk systems. By reducing the cost of purchasing, P2 cards can be used reliably again and again, without loss in quality.
John Baisley, executive vice president of Panasonic System Communications Company of North America (PSCNA), said, "Panasonic is honored to receive the coveted Technical Emmy for its pioneering efforts in the development of solid-state video recording. Since its inception nearly a decade ago, the P2 recording format has offered video users great productivity benefits and Panasonic continues to develop the P2 format with new HD and 3D models."
Panasonic's current line of high-capacity P2 cards offer substantially faster transfer rates than most professional solid-state memory cards offered by other manufacturers. All P2 cards use high-quality solid-state memory and an extremely durable die-cast aluminum body. Additionally, P2 cards provide reliable performance while recording in all types of environments, as well as instant access and full data compatibility across all P2 cameras and workflow tools.
Among the advances in P2 technology are memory cards with capacities between 2GB and 64GB, with increasingly affordable prices, and reaching transfer rates of up to 1.2 Gbps, as well as the launch of increasingly powerful codecs such as the AVC-Intra 4.2.2 10-bit codec, and, more recently, AVC-Ultra, a new compression platform with the capacity to provide 4K quality. 4:4:4, while offering lower bit-rates to handle traditional professional video applications.
The Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards have distinguished development and innovation in broadcast technology since 1948 and recognize companies, organizations and individuals for advances in technology that have a significant effect on television engineering. Panasonic has won a total of 16 Emmys, 12 of them for advances in the area of digital video technology.
