'Wrinkles': adult animation convinces the Academy again
'Wrinkles' wins two Goyas: adapted screenplay, even unseating the adaptation of 'The Skin I Live In', and best animated film.
Wrinkles, a production by Perro Verde Films, Cromosoma and Elephant in the Black Box based on the comic book of the same name by Paco Roca, managed to collect two awards at the XVI Goya gala: adapted screenplay, even superseding the adaptation of The Skin I Live In, and best animated film. The film thus prevailed over Carthago Nova and Dad, I'm a zombie.
Directed by Ignacio Ferreras, this project has had the firm commitment of Manuel Cristóbal, Rosanna Cecchini and Ángel de la Cruz, who from the first moment bet on this endearing story about Alzheimer's and old age, which was left at the gates of the Oscars.
Ángel de la Cruz thanked the Film Academy for breaking the "taboo that an animated film can only compete for the award for best film" and dedicated the award "to the Galician audiovisual sector" and to two brothers who take care of their mother who, like the protagonists of the film, suffers from Alzheimer's. De la Cruz already won Goya awards in 2001 and 2005 for The Animated Forest and A Night's Dream of San Juan.
Producer Manuel Cristóbal shared with Panorama Audiovisual his joy at the victory. "It was a gamble, they say, risky, but we bet on a film that was dimensioned and risky. These awards are a recognition of that fantastic adventure that Paco Roca's comic gave us and we are going to see what happens, now we have international sales ahead of us, we open the Cartoon Movie -which we are very excited about-, we will fight for all the awards that we still have left and see how it works," he said.
"We are starting the distribution of the film at a commercial level, we are now taking it to Brussels and we are going to show it soon in Japan coinciding with the award that has been given to Paco Roca. I think it's going to give a lot to talk about, and in the end it's a film that is arriving not only in Spain but all over the world," added Cristóbal.
From a technical point of view and starting from a very tight budget for an animation project (barely 2 million euros), Ignacio Ferreras, took on the challenge. "We had a graphic part that was not too complex and I think that with a very small budget Ignacio has been able to extract oil from his resources and above all to get a great story," said Manuel Cristóbal.
