Solid State Logic launches new E-Series modules for 500 Series racks
The new E-Series EQ and E-Series Dynamics modules bring the classic SSL sound to the 500-Series rack.
Solid State Logic has just released the new E-Series EQ Module and E-Series Dynamics Module in the popular API 500-Series rack format.
The legendary SSL SL 4000 E from 1980 is one of the classic consoles of all time and has been used on countless recordings. The launch of these new E-Series EQ and E-Series Dynamics modules makes the powerful channel processing tonal character of this beloved console available to a new group of users. SSL console sound has been available in 12 different modules for SSL's own X-Rack modular system for many years.
The system has a large and enthusiastic customer base (over 15,000 modules sold) who reap the benefits of the high-quality power supply and built-in TotalRecall offered by SSL's X-Rack. The release of two modules for the widely used 500 Series rack modular platform makes a small portion of the SSL sound available to a broader user base.
The E-Series Dynamics Module for the 500-Series rack reproduces the iconic and legendary sound of the VCA channel dynamics section of the SL 4000 E channel row. The E-Series Dynamics module includes a compressor/limiter and an expander/gate, both faithfully reproducing the circuitry and key components of the original SL 611 E Series channel row. A true RMS converter is used in the side access channel, while the gain element is an entirely discrete component design, identical to the Class A VCA chip used in the original unit. The compressor has additional switching options to eliminate the over-easy curve, as well as to use linear release instead of the more commonly used logarithmic curve. The result is a compressor with three different sounds, each with its own musical character.
The E-Series EQ Module for 500-Series racks offers two different equalizations that can be found on editions of the console produced between 1979 and 1987. Each equalization has its own response curve and tonal character. Historically, the type of equalization mounted on an individual console was distinguished by the colors used on the button covers of the LF controls, so both types of equalization have been named EQ Brown and EQ Black.
The E-Series EQ Module allows you to switch between these two different styles of equalization, which have enthused several generations of professional producers. SSL channel equalization is the classic four-band design with fully parametric LMF and HMF with Q (bandwidth) parameter controls, which has become the standard channel equalization configuration in the industry. E-Series equalization offers selective shelving or bell curve operation for LF and HF frequencies.
