Ikutaro Kakehashi, founder of Roland, retires

At 83 years old, Ikutaro will now leave all positions at Roland Corporation and subsidiaries of the group, thus beginning the retirement of one of the most influential and innovative men in the industry.

Ikutaro Kakehashi, one of the most prestigious and visionary names in our industry, retires at the age of 83, retiring from all positions of responsibility in Roland Corporation and subsidiaries of the group.

Born in Osaka in 1930, Kakehashi began his relationship with the world of electronics by founding a small shop called Kakehashi Radio in 1954. In 1960, he founded Ace Electronic Industries, a company dedicated to the manufacture of electronic musical instruments, and formed a joint venture with Hammond USA in 1968.

He left both companies in 1972 to found Roland Corporation, and began launching innovative electronic musical instruments, standing out for his capacity for innovation with solutions never seen before.

En 1991, Berklee College of Music en Estados Unidos le concedió un doctorado honorario en música. Tres años más tarde puso en marcha la Fundación Roland y asumió el cargo de residente. En 2008, fue galardonado con el título de Profesor Honorario de la Universidad de Glamorgan, Reino Unido. En febrero de 2013, la Academia norteamericana le brindó un Grammy técnico que compartió junto a Dave Smith, fundador de Sequential Circuits Inc. y presidente de turno de Dave Smith Instruments), en reconocimiento a sus esfuerzos en la creación de MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), el formato internacional común para instrumentos musicales electrónicos.

Uno de sus trabajos literarios más notable es el libro I Believe in Music, published in Japan, the United States, Germany, Taiwan and China.
