Senate of Chile

The Chilean Senate has given the green light to the Digital Terrestrial Television Law after a long parliamentary debate that has taken four years since its processing began in November 2008. Finally, the yes to this law was supported with 24 votes in favor and 3 against.

Chile has finally opted for the Japanese-Brazilian ISDB-T standard with MPEG4 encoding, thus joining an important front of Latin American countries that have opted for this standard over the European DVB-T.

With the arrival of Digital Television, the channels will have the capacity to transmit up to six signals with different content and, in addition, the electromagnetic spectrum would expand.

According to Chilean media, in the initial phase the television channels will have to assume the cost of modernizing their equipment. Users will have to do the same because they will have to buy a decoder or an integrated television.

Regarding the television industry, the signal concession time will be extended for up to 20 years for large media outlets, while those who use “third-party media” will be able to use the signals for five years.
