The European Broadcasting Union (EBU/EBU) has appointed Simon Fell as its new Director of Technology and Innovation.
Fell has more than 35 years of experience in responsibilities at the highest level in the world of broadcasting. Among other positions, he was director of future technologies at the British network ITV (2008-2009) and controller at Emerging Technologies (2004-2006).
From 1991 to 2004, Fell worked for Carlton Television, the ITV franchisee for the London region, where he held various executive positions linked to operations and emerging technologies.
He is currently the Chairman of the Technical Council at the Digital Television Group, the digital television industry association in the United Kingdom. He also participated in the EBU Technical Committee between 2006 and 2009 representing British broadcasters.
From August 15, he will be responsible for directing the Technology and Innovation policy at the EBU, with the aim of promoting innovation and integration of the media, establishing standards and promoting collaboration between members in terms of practices in media production and distribution. His role also involves driving business development for the EBU.
Fell replaces Lieven Vermaele, who announced his departure last January after six years in office.
