By the end of 2015, both companies will develop optical discs of at least 300 GB for professional use.

Panasonic Optical Discs - Sony

Sony y Panasonic have signed an agreement to jointly develop a new generation of optical discs for professional use. With this agreement, the companies intend to create a disk with a recording capacity of at least 300 GB until the end of 2015.

Both companies still have a long way to go in this development such as the relevant specifications and other issues related to the development of the new pattern of optical discs.

The optical disc, according to Sony, has excellent properties to protect it from the environment, with resistance to dust and water, and is also capable of withstanding strong changes in temperature and humidity.

It also allows for cross-generational compatibility between different formats, ensuring that data can continue to be read in any format. Despite these benefits, the company states that “both Sony and Panasonic recognize that optical discs need to store a much larger volume of content in the coming years, taking into account future file growth.” With this agreement, Sony and Panasonic intend to develop a high-capacity optical disk standard and “offer solutions that preserve valuable data for future generations.
