Rotolight rings illuminate the claustrophobic scenes of 'Captain Phillips'
The Rotolight RL48 LED rings provide great versatility to the complex filming of the new film directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Tom Hanks.
LED rings Rotolight RL48 have allowed the filming crew of the new movie starring Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips, to have exceptional lighting in the middle of a claustrophobic shoot on board a freighter.
The film directed by Paul Greengrass (Bourne Ultimatum, Green Zone, United 93…) presents the true story of the merchant ship Maersk Alabama, the first American ship to be hijacked in 200 years. The ship was hijacked in the Indian Ocean about 400 miles from Mogadishu. After a series of negotiations and struggles with the Somali pirates who had captured them, the ship is freed, but its captain, Richard Phillips, is detained. Four days later, Captain Phillips was freed by American troops.
A total of ten Rotolight RL48 units were chosen for use by Barry Ackroyd, the popular BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated cinematographer for The Hurt Locker (2008). Ackroyd chose the Rotolight RL48 for its portability and versatility on set.
Leading the lighting on the film, Harry Wiggins (The Iron Lady, Green Zone), highlights that "we filmed Captain Phillips on different boats around the world and there was a light that we always carried with us, the Rotolight. Perfectly sized and with a gelatin system incorporated into the kit, everything was always at hand and organized for when we wanted and at the temperature we chose."
