Hollywood presents its engineering Emmy awards

YouTube, Aspera, Sennheiser, Lawo, iZotope and Lightcraft Technology, among those awarded at the 65th American Academy Awards.

The Hollywood Academy presented the Emmy Awards for engineering last weekend.

One of the Emmy Awards has gone to YouTube. Since founding in 2005, the popular video distribution platform has enabled millions of people to access more than 6 million hours of video. Every minute, more than one hundred hours of video are uploaded to YouTube worldwide. To address this fundamental engineering challenge, the YouTube team has created innovative new ways to ingest, transcode at different latencies, store, manage and deliver all types of content. But YouTube is not just recorded video, but in the last year alone its “live” platform has covered more than 1,200 events, highlighting the 2012 Olympic Games or the more than 8 million simultaneous downloads during the Red Bull Stratos mission.

On the other hand, the FASP technology developed by Aspera that enables high-speed transfer and synchronization of file-based media data with complete visibility, tracking, bandwidth control and end-to-end security has also received an Emmy.

The Digital Dailies platform, promoted by Josh C. Kline, has also been awarded an Emmy and has allowed the immediate distribution of dailies in the cloud in a reliably safe, fast and low-cost way. This new way of delivering dailies from the filming set itself to post-production, allows, through the use of metadata, to approve and annotate comments with frame precision.

Another Emmy went to the iZotope RX Audio audio restoration technology. This advanced audio processing software allows you to rescue previously unusable or ruined audio. This solution eliminates and reduces common problems such as popping, clicking, hum and noise. It can repair distorted or clipped audio, eliminate annoying “pops”, knocks, crickets or birds, to name just a few.

Hollywood also wanted to recognize the work carried out by Lightcraft Technology in the development of virtual studios.

Lawo, a pioneer in the use of the ATM/SDH (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) protocol aimed at distributing audio over WAN networks to locations thousands of kilometers away, and the Final Draft screenwriting application have also seen their technological efforts rewarded with an Emmy.

In its 65th edition, the Academy also recognized Charles F. Jenkins with the Lifetime Achievement Award for advancing the television industry in terms of ingestion and archiving. Cookson has done pioneering work in moving production processes from analog to digital, methods of transporting high-quality data in an optical medium, developing innovative methods for restoring archival film, and developing end-to-end digital workflows.

This year, it is worth highlighting that Sennheiser has received an Emmy Award for engineering for the second time. This Emmy, under the name Philo T. Farnsworth Award (in honor of the inventor of electronic television), was created in 2003 to reward those technological contributions that have significantly impacted television.
