Ben Donald, executive director of BBC Worldwide's International Fiction Division, has stressed that "what attracted us to this project was the idea of growing our catalog outside the United Kingdom, while also being part of the creative process. It is also an attempt to demonstrate that the highest quality fiction can be made with a controlled budget. An ambitious project from Atresmedia, together with an intriguing original story, and the opportunity to film in English and with an international cast and creative team have made the proposal unrejectable."
For her part, Sonia Martínez, fiction director at Atresmedia TV, maintains that at the Spanish group "we strive to achieve the highest level in our fiction. Being able to undertake a project like this represents a considerable leap in quality. The possibility of innovating in our market and creating a product with international reach. We could not have a better partner than the BBC in this adventure, responsible for some of the most important audiovisual series in the history of television."

"Millions of people from the future travel to the present, fleeing an imminent global disaster. One of those time travelers heads to the home of a married couple, with a very specific mission: to prevent their murder," this is the suggestive starting point of The Refugees. Bambú Producciones, responsible for the creative part of the project, opens in this way and with the help of Atresmedia and BBC to the international production market.
