Samsung leads the global smart TV market
The South Korean brand, according to a study by Strategy Analytics, accounts for 26% of the market, compared to 16% for LG or 11% for Sony.
With a 26% market share, Samsung would lead the smart TV segment. According to a study by Strategy Analytics, the Korean brand would be the leader in the sector at the end of the first quarter of this year, ahead of other manufacturers such as LG (with a share of 16%) or Sony (with 11%).
Its report indicates that global smart TV sales reached 12.7 million units in the first quarter of 2013, 8 percentage points more than in the same period in 2012.
Jia Wu, director of connected devices in the home at the consultancy, highlighted that “regardless of whether consumers fully understand or take advantage of the features of smart TVs, which have, among their functions, Internet connectivity, it is clear that marketers are trying to use the Smart TV resource to elevate the value proposition of flat screens.”
David Watkins, director of connected home devices at Strategy Analytics, added that “as Smart TV becomes a standard feature on televisions, dictated both by the desire to raise prices and by consumers' interest in making purchases with an eye to the future, the market shares of the Smart TV market will begin to increasingly resemble those of the television market in general.”
