'Gravity', directed by Mexican Alfonso Cuarón, sweeps the Oscars
The space odyssey wins seven golden statuettes, including those for direction, photography, editing and effects, while the other main protagonist of the night, 'Twelve Years a Slave', is satisfied with three awards, including best film.
Few surprises at the 86th edition of the most important film awards held tonight at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. Gravity, the space odyssey directed by the Mexican Alfonso Cuarón has been the great winner, winning seven of the ten statuettes for which it was eligible.
However, the award for best film went to the drama Twelve years of slavery, a film that also won the award for best adapted screenplay as well as an Oscar for debut supporting actress Lupita Nyong'o.
Cuarón has made history for being the first Mexican to win the Oscar for best direction with his Kubrikian space odyssey, which has also given the director the award for best editing and has swept the technical categories. The film broke the ice of the night by winning the Oscar for best visual effects and then added the best sound mixing, best sound editing, best photography, best editing, best soundtrack and direction.
On the other hand, the biggest losers on movie night in Hollywood have been American Hustle (zero awards out of ten nominations), Captain Phillips y Nebraska (zero out of six) and The Wolf of Wall Street (zero out of five).
American Hustle, by David O. Russell, came away empty-handed despite the ten nominations with which it competed. As for Martin Scorsese's million-dollar blockbuster, The Wolf of Wall Street, despite being a hit at the box office, has walked the Hollywood red carpet without pain or glory. On the opposite side, low cost production such as Dallas Buyers Club, Jean-Marc Vallée, was the third winner of the night with three awards: Matthew McConaughey, best actor; Jared Leto, supporting actor; and makeup (whose spending on filming barely involved a budget of 250 euros).
The Italian The great beauty, by Paolo Sorrentino, which started as a favorite, has won the Oscar for best foreign language film.
