Verizon and Ericsson lead the Indianapolis 500 with LTE Multicast
Verizon Wireless demonstrated the first LTE Multicast service in the United States over its commercial 4G LTE network provided by Ericsson. The technology includes live video from the rear of the car and on-board cameras, with real-time race information.
Johan Wibergh, Head of Networks Business Unit at Ericsson, stated that "Verizon is leading the race in offering multicast video services over its commercial LTE network. Ericsson's LTE solution is designed to ensure the high performance and great video experience that Verizon's LTE Multicast service demands at events like the Indy 500."
Verizon's LTE Multicast capabilities were tested through a series of cameras deployed both on the track and in the cars to provide real-time visibility of the race. Live video of the race represents a richer on-track experience for fans thanks to this new platform and technology.
The high-density user environment associated with large sporting events is becoming a challenge for mobile networks. This possibility offers a unique opportunity for the mobile network provider to improve its performance, thanks to the optimized efficiency of the Multicast network, and at the same time, will generate innovative services for fans that allow new revenue opportunities for both the network provider and the content manager.
Ericsson's end-to-end LTE broadcast solution offers the ability to meet high network demand and creates opportunities for new services.
