José Ramón Díez replaces Ignacio Corrales as head of TVE
The veteran professional returns to TVE as director of the public channel, a position he already held in 1999 and 2000.
At the proposal of the President of the Corporation, Leopoldo González-Echenique, the Board of Directors appointed this Monday José Ramón Díez Director of Spanish Television, replacing Ignacio Corrales. The poor audience results and the little room for maneuver on a public television with a difficult economic situation have been determining factors in this decision.
José Ramón Díez has a degree in Economics and Business Sciences. He joined RTVE by competitive examination in 1984. He began professionally in the Territorial Center of Cantabria and in 1987 he moved to Madrid where he began a long career as a director in the Sports section.
Much of his career has been dedicated to covering the Olympic Games, highlighting the realization or production of eight opening and closing ceremonies: Barcelona 92, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Turin 2006, Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010, London 2012 and those held this year in 2014 in Sochi. His participation in nine Summer Olympics and three Winter Olympics make him an expert in covering major sporting events.
José Ramón Díez has also directed numerous technical and production operations, which credit him as one of the most prestigious international television directors. He has been in charge, among others, of extremely complex events such as directing the USA 94 World Cup, covering International Olympic Committee Congresses, the Pan American Games and the World Cycling and Athletics Championships.
At TVE, Díez has held different positions of responsibility. He has been Deputy Director of Programs, in 1997; Director of Operations, in 1998; and Director of TVE in 1999, a position in which he remained until May 2000.
