Marc Murtra replaces Álvarez-Pallete as head of Telefónica
The Board of Directors of Telefónica, meeting urgently on Saturday, January 18, has approved the appointment of Marc Murtra Millar as president of the operator, replacing José María Álvarez-Pallete after almost nine years in office.
The Council meeting approved the resolution of the contract signed with José María Álvarez-Pallete as executive president of the Board of Directors of Telefónica, at the same time requesting him to resign from his position as director. After his resignation, Telefónica's highest body expressed "its utmost gratitude to José María Álvarez-Pallete for the years of work and collaboration with the Telefónica Group and, especially, for the many services provided and for his extraordinary effort, dedication and contribution during his long professional career in the group."
According to a statement sent by Telefónica to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV), the change in leadership responds to the new shareholder structure of the operator (in which the Sociedad de Participaciones Industriales QUIET y Caixa Criteria are the main shareholders) so “some of its relevant shareholders have expressed the convenience of undertaking a new stage in the executive presidency.”
Profile of Marc Murtra
As for the new president, Mark Murtra (Blackburn, 1972) is an industrial engineer from the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineers of Barcelona (ETSEIB) of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. He also has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Leonard School of Business at New York University.
The until now executive president of the Board of Directors of Indra He is an independent director of Ebro Foods, member of its Executive Committee and president of the Audit and Control Committee, as well as an Industry Director of Turbo Propellers.
He began his career in the nuclear industry at British Nuclear Fuels in the United Kingdom, and continued his professional career at the strategy consultancy DiamondCluster, where he worked for large technology companies. He has dedicated several years to public service, where he was a specialist in Digital Strategy, Digital Transformation and Public-Private Partnerships. In this role, he served as general director of Red.es, as well as chief of staff of the Minister of Industry, Tourism and Commerce.
He has been managing partner of Closa Investment Bankers, as well as director of CREA Inversión, and has extensive knowledge of the technology sector.
He is an associate professor of Financial Management, Financial Economics and a Master of Science in Finance and Banking at the Pompeu Fabra University, where he teaches classes to Business Administration and Management, Economics and Master's degree students.
