Ultra HD Blu-ray incorporates new sound formats such as DTS:X and Dolby Atmos, a higher frame rate per second (60fps) and high dynamic range (HDR) images.

UltraHD Bluray

La Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has completed the Ultra HD Blu-ray specifications. The main attractions of the new format, which will have a new logo, are to offer support for 4K resolutions up to 3840 x 2160 pixels and the incorporation of the latest video and audio standards. Future players compatible with Ultra HD Blu-ray will also be compatible with current Blu-ray and televisions must offer support for HDMI 2.0a (with HDCP 2.2).

Ultra HD Blu-ray also features more colors, new sound formats such as DTS:X and Dolby Atmos, a higher frame rate per second (60fps) and high dynamic range (HDR) images. The new features and resolution require more space, so the capacity of the drives goes up to 66GB for double-layer ones and 100GB for triple-layer ones.

The arrival of content in 4K format to homes is not new. Netflix, YouTube and Amazon already offer some series or videos at that resolution through streaming, a technology whose quality needs to improve to reach what Ultra HD Blu-ray will offer.

The BDA will begin licensing Ultra HD Blu-ray products from July and the first models are scheduled to arrive later this year.
