76% of Spaniards have 4G mobile broadband coverage.

The Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, through the Secretary of State for Telecommunications and the Information Society (SETSI), has published the fourth edition of the report 'Broadband Coverage in Spain', which corresponds to the first quarter of 2015.

The study, which can be consulted on the website of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, highlights that currently 85% of the population has access to 10 megabyte Internet and that Internet coverage at 30 megabyte speed is 65%.

Another significant fact that the report includes is that currently 61% of Spaniards have access to 100 megabytes broadband, which represents an increase of 5 percentage points compared to the previous year thanks to the growth of fiber optics.

The benefits of mobile broadband have been improved with the introduction of 4G, which began to be deployed in mid-2013 and whose coverage level has reached 76% of the population. The growth of LTE coverage will continue during 2015, thanks to the availability of the 800 Mhz frequency band, after the release of the digital dividend.

Additionally, an analysis of broadband coverage in rural areas has been carried out, finding the following coverage at low speeds: 90% at the speed of 2 megabytes, 70% at the speed of 10 megabytes and 98% for 3.5G mobile broadband. For the highest speeds and for the latest generation technologies, the differences with the averages for the country as a whole are still significant.

Finally, it should be noted that this year, together with the national report, two documents are published with the particularization of the tables, graphs and maps corresponding to each autonomous community, thus allowing equally precise knowledge of the situation in their respective geographical areas.

Preparation of the report: coverage maps

The report is prepared from the information contained in the coverage maps by technology and speed prepared by the SETSI, with a geographical breakdown relative to each of the 61,667 unique population entities existing in Spain.

For its preparation, data provided by 126 operators were used, as well as the most recent demographic and census data published by the National Institute of Statistics. The report can be accessed through this link.

Coverage information by technology and speed is also available for online consultation by municipality, province, autonomous community or the entire national territory, through this link.

Public aid for the extension of ultrafast broadband

Last April, the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism called non-refundable aid for an amount of 63 million euros, for projects to extend the latest generation broadband networks, within the framework of the actions planned in the Digital Agenda for Spain.

The objective of this aid is to accelerate the extension of the coverage of public electronic communications networks capable of providing high-speed (30 Mbps or higher) and very high-speed (100 Mbps or higher) broadband services to areas without current or planned coverage in the next three years, called NGA white areas.

The detailed information on coverage by technology and speed also made it possible to identify the white areas, without coverage, susceptible to benefiting from the public aid called by the SETSI in said call.

At the closing of the application submission period, on May 11, 169 projects had been submitted by 64 operators, with a cumulative investment of 262.4 million euros, and a requested aid of 90.6 million euros.
