DPA microphones captured the sound in 'Mad Max: Fury Road'

This action-packed film presented a number of challenges in audio capture, but thanks to the DPA d:screet miniature microphones they were overcome.

Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth installment of the saga starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult, and directed, produced and co-written by George Miller, has marked the return to the big screen of the future world of Mad Max after three decades.

Ben Osmo, heading the audio mix, chose the miniature microphones DPA d: screet 4063 with low sensitivity and tension to record dialogue during the filming of action scenes that involved fast-paced chases through the Namibian desert. He also used DPA d:screet 4062 microphones with extra low sensitivity for recordings inside various vehicles equipped with magnetic DPA recording media.

In Fury Road, vehicle noises often drowned out the dialogue, especially if the actors were in the vehicles or standing near them, so Osmo arranged the microphones camouflaged among the actors' clothing.

"We used low-sensitivity d:screets for the eight main cast members inside the War Rig cockpit and they provided all the dialogue in FX. At the same time, we put hidden DPA d:screets in the FX cockpit for action capture. We also put them around the engine compartment, near the exhaust and transmission pipes and up on the top of the rig," says Osmo.
