The satellite services operator How many has presented a new line of low-cost broadcast contribution solutions and services that use the Ka Band. The offer includes the equipment of mobile units, portable systems and contribution services for broadcasts in SD and HD, with no minimum annual commitment in pay-per-use, occasional and permanent links modalities.

Quantis has already supplied six mobile units for regional and local television stations and production companies in Barcelona, Girona, San Sebastián, Gijón, Palma de Mallorca and Madrid. The systems include a small self-steering antenna, modem and codecs. Thanks to the reduced dimensions and low consumption of the equipment, it is possible to place the link and contribution systems and the editing systems in a single mobile unit, avoiding the need for a second mobile unit usually required in traditional Ku Band systems.

In this sense, the Quantis offer includes Fly-away (portable) equipment that fits in a suitcase and allows the link to be located anywhere, no matter how difficult the access may be. These systems include a small antenna with automatic pointing, a modem, codecs, and all of this can be powered by batteries and are configured and managed using a smartphone.

The solution is completed with signal transport, where Quantis offers different options, both for bandwidth and contracting. The minimum package for SD broadcasts in H.264 format, with a bandwidth of 4 Mbps, is 15 minutes, with a cost of 22.5 euros. The HD broadcast option, with a bandwidth of 8 Mbps, costs 45 euros for 15 minutes.

“The KA band allows us to reduce contribution costs between two and four times, both in occasional events and in the case of permanent links, making television transport or streaming of live events with the highest quality very affordable,” adds Mir.

On the other hand, thanks to the low cost of manually pointed fixed antennas, every day more television stations and production companies use them permanently in places where they periodically broadcast television broadcasts: churches or municipal sports halls, etc., avoiding the movement of DSNG mobile units.
