Rodeo FX wins its second Emmy for the visual effects of 'Game of Thrones'

The visual effects studio used all its experience in animation, digital matte painting and crowd simulation.

Rodeo FX He carried out nearly 200 shots loaded with visual effects for the fifth season of Games of Thrones, the big winner at this year's Emmy Awards. One of these awards, the one dedicated specifically to visual effects, has been awarded to the team formed by Stevel Kullback, Joe Bauer, Adam Chazen, Jabar Raisani, Eric Carney, Stuart Brisdon, Derek Spears, James Kinnings and Matthew Rouleau. Rodeo FX also won the Emmy for best effects with the fourth season of the popular series, making this the second award given by the United States Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

The visual effects studio used its expertise in animation, digital matte painting and crowd simulation to create sequences from scratch, including the destruction of the Harpy statue atop the Meereen temple.

Matthew Rouleau, VFX supervisor at Rodeo FX highlights the challenge of working for this television blockbuster, since “the aim is to achieve cinematic quality, but with a much more demanding schedule.”

For the sequence of the destruction of the great pyramid, Rodeo FX invested almost a year of work. "As we needed short plans of the pyramid, it was essential to work brick by brick. Each brick has been modeled and textured independently," emphasizes Rouleau.

In addition to the project Game of Thrones, Rodeo FX has been responsible for the effects of films such as Birdman o Pacific Rim.
