This XDCAM shoulder camcorder features an optimal balance of weight and wireless features, giving it enormous advantages in its news application.

Sony PXW-X400

Sony It is expected that in February 2016 it will add the new PXW-X400 shoulder camcorder to its portfolio of capture solutions. Its light weight, the possibility of recording at 50p XAVC and its more solid wireless and network capabilities make it a device designed for news production.

This new camcorder combines all the capabilities professional producers need: expanded connectivity for faster delivery, improved ergonomics for comfortable work in the field, and high performance for efficient workflow.

The Ethernet interface (RJ45 connector) of the new camcorder allows it to be connected directly to a network when the wireless LAN is unstable or unavailable, for file transfer, control and live streaming from a web browser. A Field Communications (NFC) feature gives users the option to one-touch link the camera and a mobile device. The Content Browser Mobile application allows users to remotely preview or control the camcorder settings of various menu functions.

The multiple external signals (HD/SD SDI) function allows recording of an external 1.5G HD-SDI signal to an SxS card, a useful function for recording a distributed signal from another camera in the field without a portable deck.

When it comes to redesigning the internal structure of the camera body, Sony has dramatically improved the weight balance and handling capabilities compared to previous models. The combination of the new manual lens and the more balanced body solves any problems with pitching forward due to weight and significantly reduces the load on the right hand.

The camcorder's “online button” allows users to bypass the use of a mobile device or the camera menu to directly control power on and off through the following functions: direct output of AV signals to assigned destinations; automatic upload of proxy or high-resolution files to cloud and FTP services; and power on/off control via Sony's PWS-100RX1 network station that enables QoS live streaming while recording.

The low-power (22W) PXW-X400 camcorder uses a 2/3″ 3-chip CMOS image sensor and supports several HD and SD formats, including XAVC. Optional lenses include a 20x manual focus lens (model PXW-X400KC) and a 16x autofocus lens (model PXW-X400 KF, feature available from May 2016).
