Daniel Martínez Lara and Rafael Cano Méndez develop a very personal project with the only help of tools like Blender.

Alike by Daniel Martínez Lara, Rafael Cano Méndez, Goya for best animated short

In the animated short category, the 2016 Goya went to Daniel Martínez Lara and Rafael Cano Méndez, authors of Alike. The proposal comes from a project by students and former students of Pepe School Land, a school located in Barcelona and dedicated to 3D animation promoted by Martínez himself.

As the latter explains, "the basis of this short film is inspired by our experience as parents and how this experience makes you reflect on the world of education and how you believe you should educate your children. From there comes a project in which we collaborate with former students of the school to develop it. It is not strictly a school project that is within the training program, but rather it is a personal project in which we have invested four years of work."

The film is produced under the Linux operating system and free software, making the most of these tools. This work scheme, according to Daniel Martínez, responds to "my three passions, which are teaching, creating short films and the technical part of creating with tools. That is where the topic of Linux and Blender software, which is free and open source, fits in."

Regarding distribution, Rafael Cano recognizes that "it is difficult to make money from a short film but another aspect to take into account is visibility through awards and festivals. It is even good to mix animation and fiction festivals because it gives good results and strengthens the animation industry. We have very good experience in this sense with the Aguilar de Campó Festival."
