Telefónica creates Telxius, a global telecommunications infrastructure company
The infrastructure assets initially grouped in Telxius will include approximately 15,000 Telefónica telecommunications towers in Spain and other countries, as well as the 31,000 km international fiber optic network.
Telefónica has announced the creation of Telxius, a new global company that brings together certain of the group's infrastructure assets and for which it has proposed the appointment of Alberto Horcajo as CEO. The birth of the new company is part of the strategy to optimize the group's asset portfolio.
Telxius will allow management of its infrastructures at a global level, in a more specialized and focused way, with the aim of increasing the services provided to other operators, improving profitability on capital employed and being able to participate more actively in the growth opportunities existing in the sector, including the possibility of incorporating third-party assets.
The infrastructure assets initially grouped in Telxius will include approximately 15,000 Telefónica telecommunications towers in Spain and other countries, as well as the group's 31,000 km international submarine fiber optic network, including SAM-1, a submarine cable that connects the United States with Central and South America.
Currently, Telefónica has a high-capacity fiber optic network that connects more than 40 countries in Europe and America, including the United States. It is an international Tier-1 network that transports more than 4.5 Tbps of traffic per year and offers telecommunications services to both the Telefónica Group and other fixed and mobile operators, internet providers (ISPs) and content providers.
In the coming months, a series of newly created companies with the assets already mentioned will gradually be incorporated into Telxius.
