Lawo launches V Matrix software-based routing platform

The new ecosystem allows the hardware to be transformed to obtain different functions according to each need via software.

The German manufacturer Lawo has just debuted its new V Matrix platform at NAB 2016. This solution designed for broadcasters and audiovisual service operators is a routing and processing platform capable of adapting to any need with a software update.
V Matrix will be shipped in a scalable 1U, 2U or 3U chassis, with various generic processing blades connected to a high-capacity COTS switch with redundant 10GE and 40GE connections to form an IP-based processing and routing matrix. The system also has SDI connections as an option, controlled by the VSM Broadcast Control and Monitoring software.

In this way, the system allows signal routing and switching in both the IP and SDI fields and includes Lawo's SDN for extremely precise video routing at the frame level.
Philipp Lawo, CEO of the brand, commented: "Let's imagine that we have a single hardware that can be a router, a switching matrix or any other video processing and distribution function with a single software click. That is what we present now."

In addition, Lawo assures that the system can be placed in a hybrid cloud environment to perform all work remotely, reducing costs and giving way to a new processing localization business model for broadcasters.

V Matrix leverages multiple cores connected to a high-capacity COTS switch with redundant 10GE and 40GE connections to form a distributed routing and processing IP matrix with frame-accurate clean switching exactly like a legacy system baseband matrix.

Software-defined virtual modules, employing generic compute blade servers on high-capacity cores, can be loaded to create any required functionality, allowing entire workflows to be redesigned in minutes as requirements change from production to production. Core processing blade servers are housed in one, two or three rack unit frames with physical connectivity to legacy SDI equipment provided via optional V Matrix input/output cards with Lawo VSM relay control and the monitoring system serves as the control layer. The system enables signal switching and routing in both the IP and SDI domains and includes Lawo SDN control for clean, frame-accurate switching video routing in the IP domain, as well as control and monitoring for existing legacy SDI infrastructure and third-party IP equipment.

Total flexibility
