Coinciding with CineEurope2016, which is being held this week in Barcelona, Sony has made public that one of the most technically ambitious and commercially independent multiplex cinemas in Germany has just tested a 4K projection system on a large screen.

In a pioneering technical test with Sony Digital Cinema 4K, the Nuremberg Cinecittà multiplexes have installed the new solution for 4K projection for large screens. 4K images from four Sony SRX-R515 projectors combine to deliver a total light output of 60,000 lumens.

With more power than Sony's popular SRX-R515DS dual projection solution, the wide brightness enables dazzling illumination levels exceeding 27.4 cd/m2 in 3D on Cinecittà's massive 30 meter wide Cinemagnum screen. Associated with the theater's high-power Dolby Atmos sound system, it offers customers an unforgettable cinema experience in the 520-seat auditorium. Another plus for 3D presentations here is Cinecittà's ability to use its existing polarizing 3D glasses for viewers, making this a truly immersive experience.

With a contrast ratio of 8000:1, the system can be immediately configured for 2D or 3D presentations. Sony believes the simple, energy-efficient HPM multi-lamp reduces maintenance needs compared to conventional xenon light sources with shorter lifespans, significantly minimizing current ownership costs compared to other large premium screen projection solutions available on the market.

Its operation is straightforward and equivalent to the use of a single projector standard, using the same automatic alignment system that comes included in Sony's popular SRX-R515DS dual projection system. This projection system has been supplied to Cinecittà by European cinema technology specialist CinemaNext with on-site technical support from Sony engineers from Japan.

In 2015, Cinecittà installed Germany's first SRX-R515DS dual 4K projection system. Since then, this cutting-edge operator has installed more dual 4K systems to 7 of its 22 screens.
