Test 5G during Coronation of Charles III

Coinciding with the Coronation of King Charles III in the United Kingdom, Nevion put its flagship media orchestration platform, VideoIPath, to the test, demonstrating dynamic prioritization of live signals over 5G connectivity in a proof of concept (PoC). They participated in the test Sony, parent of Nevion, the private 5G network developer SA Neutral Wireless and the research and development section of the British public broadcaster BBC.

Although 5G potentially offers fast connectivity, the best-effort nature of the commonly used technology may make it unusable in situations where there is a high level of contention for available bandwidth. This is clearly the case with public 5G networks, where many mobile phone users or even broadcasters competing for resources may be active. However, this may also be the case for dedicated private 5G networks with many equipment (including cameras) connected.

The objective of the PoC was, therefore, to demonstrate that multimedia signals could be prioritized in a autonomous non-public network (SNPN) through the quality of service (QoS) control.

The solution for this PoC was based on elements of the offer Networked Live from Sony and Nevion. For media transport, each camera was equipped with a Sony prototype link, which provided HEVC video encoding of ultra low latency, and was connected to the SNPN Neutral Wireless 5G through an Xperia 5G smartphone.
