In 2020, almost all televisions sold in the world will be compatible with HDR
However, only 30% will have true high dynamic range performance capabilities.
According to a study by IHS Markit, during 2016 more than 4 million HDR-compatible televisions will be sold, increasing this figure to 30 million units in 2020. For that year, IHS expects that almost all 4K televisions sold worldwide will have HDR capabilities, although it notes that only 30% will have true high dynamic range performance capabilities.
Global demand for 4K televisions continues to grow despite the fact that total sales will reduce slightly in 2016. Faced with the continued decline in prices for high-end 4K televisions, manufacturers and retailers see HDR as an excellent opportunity to achieve a new boost to their business.
Paul Gagnon, director of television research at IHS, says that "in the case of HDR, only some units improve viewing performance that would benefit the consumer, while the rest will have little discernible difference to consumers."
The 4K TV market is growing rapidly from 55 million units in 2016 to more than 100 million units in 2019, reaching 100 percent of sales at 50 inches and larger in 2019. As was once the case with HD or now with 4K, HDR will initially be offered on larger screen sizes, where the additional costs are supported by the larger premiums. More than 80 percent of HDR television sales will come from screens larger than 50 inches.
