The successful Sky series in the United Kingdom uses the Panasonic camera in its sixth season, achieving excellent results in terms of color and image resolution.

Mount Pleasant

The series Mount Pleasant, premiered in August 2011 on Sky 1 in the United Kingdom, has since then achieved great audience success season after season.

Before filming the sixth season, Tiger Aspect Productions and Rental Company 24/7 carried out numerous tests to decide which camera would be most suitable for the production of the new installment.

Tiger Aspect wanted a camera that offered great quality and images that reflected the colorful and vibrant feel of the series. Tests took into account multiple LUTs, sensor range, dual ISO, and side-by-side comparisons. Finally, the production company opted for the Varicam 35 of Panasonic.

Mark Devlin, producer of Mount Pleasant, acknowledges that “recording with the Varicam 35 has been fabulous” and highlights that the codec it uses “is so efficient that we have managed to go from HD to 2K without having to increase the necessary storage.”

For a series as bright and sunny as Mount Pleasant, Devlin acknowledges that the Panasonic camera made a difference in terms of color and image resolution.

Andy Hollis, director of photography Mount Pleasant, states that although it was the first time he worked with a Varicam, “once I knew where the buttons were, everything was at hand very easily.” "The production of the series is very tight in terms of time since we have to shoot numerous scenes every day. If the camera were slower or more difficult to understand then we would not be able to keep up with this pace. For us, it works perfectly." Hollis also emphasizes the fidelity and naturalness of the colors that the camera collects in sunny environments.

The Varicam has a 35 mm MOS image sensor achieving a wide dynamic range and a wide color gamut. It also offers dual ISO settings of 800 and 5000. The native ISO of 5000 allows for extremely high-quality images in very low light situations, Hollis highlights.

The director of photography also highlights the added value of using the camera's viewfinder since "as we are recording we can get a very precise idea of what we are recording without having to use an expensive monitor. Even in direct sunlight we can see a faithful image through the integrated viewfinder."
