The consulting firm Strategy Analytics announces the 'top ten' of the trends that will mark the new year.

The consultant Strategy Analytics has released its predictions for 2017 in terms of OTT video, digital advertising and virtual reality that it collects in the Digital Media Strategies (DMS) study.

Michael Goodman, director of DMS, has noted that "as a result of the proliferation of broadband and connected devices, consumers have more choices than ever in how, when and where they connect with music, games and video. As consumer adoption of online alternatives increases, the degree of disintegration experienced by traditional distribution models is accelerating."

These are the ten trends that will mark 2017

  • Brands will reevaluate the importance of reach.
  • Television advertising in markets such as the United States will begin to be bought and sold based on Total Audience Ratings.
  • Digital video will account for a larger share of advertising spending. Global spending on digital video ads will exceed $20 billion in 2017, representing 18% of global digital ad spend.
  • In 2017, television revenue (subscription + advertising) will represent 88% of the OTT television and video market ($192.7 billion in the United States).
  • Twitter will be put up for sale
  • Programmatic advertising will become mainstream in Western Europe, with programmatic digital display ads accounting for almost half of digital advertising revenue in 2017.
  • Live video, especially live video via social media, will gain viewership significantly.
  • Driven by continued growth in advertising revenues across SVoD and OTT services, global OTT video revenues will exceed $50 billion in 2017.
  • Multichannel virtual video distributors (MPVD) will gain prominence
  • Project Scorpio, the most powerful Xbox, will be released in 2017 with VR support.
