The new ChannelMaker-in-the-Cloud broadcast system is completely cloud-based on an Amazon Web Services infrastructure.

The relocation of different processes in broadcast environments to the cloud is gaining ground every day. Now it is wTVision which in collaboration with Atem will offer a cloud playout system based on an Amazon Web Services infrastructure.

ChannelMaker-in-the-Cloud is based on the latest version of wTVision's playout automation solution and aims to open up new possibilities for broadcasters around the world.

Their proposal takes full advantage of the powerful encoding of Kyrion CM5000 technology as a live content input source to ChannelMaker-in-the-Cloud, which is fully hosted on Amazon Web Services. ChannelMaker prepares the playlists and plays the clips previously uploaded to Amazon Simple Storage Service, inserting, if necessary, all types of 3D graphics. All of this is encoded into an output stream that is sent to a channel distribution center via the Kyrion DR5000 where it will follow its traditional path to distribution. DR5000 can receive inputs from two IP sources (in addition to 4xRF and 2xASI inputs), allowing the system to automatically switch to backup mode in the event of a failure of the main broadcast scheme.

wTVision's mixed environment approach has proven to be especially useful as the local media can be automatically detected by wTVision's Media Agent by uploading the material to Amazon without user intervention, making it immediately available for sequencing.

A cloud version of wTVision Media Manager also enables sequencing of media that is not yet available in the cloud but is present on a local installation. When this happens, ChannelMaker-in-the-Cloud automatically requests the missing content and locally installed media agents will transfer the required clips in time for playback.

Flexibility

Alex Fraser, CTO and founding partner of wTVision, acknowledges that "this cloud-based solution is the next step in broadcasters' ability to offload technical complexity. They can now eliminate high-level investment architectures and move to a proven platform, which is hosted on a highly available and reliable infrastructure, creating a cloud extension for the existing business or getting off to a good start on a new project focusing on content."

At NAB 2017, wTVision will demonstrate its new proposal as well as the flexibility of ChannelMaker that allows broadcasters to easily create, optimize or expand a television channel, it will now enter a new phase in which portability will be key.

Vincent Pedregno, sales director for Southern Europe at Ateme, highlights that his company "has always been committed to offering first-class encoding solutions to many broadcasters where video quality is very important. We have been seeking and making ourselves available to innovative partners and projects. wTVision's cloud playout is part of an innovative partnership strategy to offer broadcasters a disruptive, flexible and efficient solution, while maintaining the best possible video quality."

ChannelMaker is marketed as a channel-in-a-box, multi-system solution or advertising insertion tool and can be fully customized for any specific requirement. As an automation system for video and graphics scheduling and playback, ChannelMaker sits alongside other operational processes provided by wTvision ensuring a seamless workflow of any channel in terms of ingest, traffic and storage, among others.
