HDMI 2.1

The new HDMI 2.1 is getting closer every day since the HDMI Forum has announced that it will make the final specifications public to manufacturers between the first and third quarters of 2018.

The main novelty is that its bandwidth will be above Thunderbolt 3 with 48 Gbps transfer. In this way, it will support both 4K at 120 Hz and 8K at 60 Hz and 10K, although the refresh rate at which it will work at this resolution is not yet known. To achieve these transfer rates, a new cable called HDMI 48H has been developed, which will be backward compatible with all current standards.

Another interesting point is that it will support Dynamic HDR for all compatible resolutions and VVR (Varbiable Refresh Rate), a technology capable of adjusting the refresh rate depending on the connected device, which in practice will mean an automatic latency adjustment.

Manufacturers that adopt the HDMI 2.1 standard in their devices will be able to offer users functions such as ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), a mode that seeks maximum fluidity in the display of content or QMS (Quick Media Switching) that reduces waiting times when switching between different HDMI sources.
The HDMI Forum expects that a considerable number of devices with HDMI 2.1 will already be exhibited at CES 2019
